On Sunday, August 2, 2009 the church voted to change its name to New Covenant United Methodist Church.
For decades the church name has been Kingshighway United Methodist Church because early in the 1900's the name of the street was Kingshighway Park. After months of conversation and discernment the Church Conference voted to become New Covenant UMC!
Names are important. Names remind us of our identity. Names clarify purpose. Names are an intimate part of who we are. My prayer for this church is that we don't simply stop our transformation with a name change. My prayer is that the name change would remind us of God's covenant with us - to be God's people. That we would be priests and holy, to be a blessing to the city and world around us.
God made a covenant with Abraham and said that all the world would be
blessed through him. God made a covenant with Moses on Mount Sinai
where God said he would make them a kingdom of priests and a holy
nation. God renewed his covenant with Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, David,
Ezra and many others through the scripture reminding them that they
were God's people - they had a covenant.
Jesus
with his disciples in an upper room during the Passover took some bread
and took the cup and said, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." Hebrews 8 talks about the New Covenant that God makes with his people: "I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest." Do you hear it? Do you hear our call - our identity as New Covenant UMC? The New Covenant is a call to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world.
