Bellerive Day 2009

While we re-format our new web home, please enjoy a bit about our history:

We trace our origins back to the fall of 1877. The first meeting place was an open market place on South Broadway, with an auctioneer's stand serving as the pulpit. Here in the open air, we worshiped, and when cold weather arrived, a tent was erected. It was thus that the Carondelet Methodist Church was born.

Soon, those early Methodists felt the need of a place to worship, a building to become the focal point of their discipleship. Consequently, the first Church building was erected. It was a wooden structure, and was completed in 1878 at the corner of Pennsylvania and Union. The Congregation worshiped here until 1890, when a brick structure was erected on the corner of Virginia and Blow. This building served as our home until 1913.

In 1913 we moved to our present location where a brick chapel was constructed. We changed our name from the Carondelet Methodist Church to the Kingshighway Methodist due to our location on the corner of Kingshighway Park and Colorado Ave. Kingshighway Park was later named Bellerive Blvd.

In 1926 the present Sanctuary was completed and we joyfully accepted the task of infusing the Christian Gospel into the life of the Carondelet Community.

In 1968 the Methodist Episcopal Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church merged and the church reflected the new name as Kingshighway United Methodist Church.  As the church grew we also remodeled the Sanctuary and Fellowship hall among other parts of the church building.

In 2009 Kingshighway UMC once again changed its name to New Covenant United Methodist Church to reflect its mission to reach out to South St. Louis City and be the heart and hands of Jesus Christ.
